With Dr. artist the senses got spiritualized and poetic painting went from mythology to philosophy. In the Netherlands, the pictor vulgaris could also be a tavern keeper and even the still lifes went from vanitas to delicious delicacies. French style, gallantry was delicate as a porcelain, got drunk in vapours and perfumed the atmosphere. Music wanted to be painting and painting had synesthesia – Symbolism combined everything, while Impressionism got rid of literature. In an instant, the moving image was already simulated well beyond tableaux vivants and panoramas. The only thing missing was for psychoanalysis to combine with surrealism and for the latter to enter cinema. Dissonance would take Kandisky’s painting-rhythm to the limit until the destruction of rules was the motto. Silence would eventually arrive, just as in happenings girls would be licking marmelade from a car’s hood. Through the interstices we were left with fun, irony and the pastiche in postmodern quotes - “let’s look at a trailer”.

“Letters that are not mailed cease to be missives for possible friends; they turn into archived things” (Peter Sloterdijk, 2000)*. The writings and testimonies of and about artists, in their most varied forms - diaries, letters, lessons and reflections - allow us to explore the theme of the creative process and its aesthetic and philosophical reflection, crossing in a non-linear way different generations, epochs and artistic movements (approaching the cases of romanticism, modernity, modernism, postmodernism and contemporary art). Instead of becoming “archived objects”, the writings become messages for their recipients and “possible friends”.

Program The focus of this workshop is to deconstruct and demystify the use of visual references. Far from being a crutch or a copy, references are a tool to diversify and feed our visual vocabulary. Taking photography as a starting point, the process invites a creative dialogue with the image — questioning it, dismantling its structure and emotion — so that, based on this analysis, and in an act of translation and expansion, a new image can be created.
