Exploring the expressive and stylistic potential of black ink drawing, with one foot based on cinema and the other on comics.
Departing from black and white cinema references, the students will draw key scenes from the various films filtering their interpretation through the personal styles of different comics authors. They will do so using black ink exclusively.
The workshop will be divided into two phases. First, a new pair of film/Comics will be given to interpret in each session: a Metropolis scenario, by Fritz Lang, with the thick and confident lines of a Jack Kirby, for instance, or a scene from O Sangue, by Pedro Costa, in the light of the shaky and anarchic gesture of a Brian Chippendale. In a second phase, the drawings produced will become the starting point for the elaboration of two comic strip boards by the enroled students.
The program’s ultimate purpose is the development of two essential skills: 1) principles of scene composition and light modulation that can be used in illustration as well as in comics; and 2) observation techniques that allow for the identification of the characteristics of the graphic styles of different authors, so as to consciously use them and adapt them according to one’s own affinities. Students will also learn to identify the materials appropriate for the execution of specific expressive modulations, always using black ink drawing.

Notes
For the first session, students must bring:
A3 pad (preferably over 120g in weight)
Permanent black ink pens of various thicknesses (with tips between 0.1 and 0.8)
Very thick black ink marker.

Program Live Model is the situation par excellence of observation drawing, where the study of the human body (in motion, at rest, posing, etc.) and the experimentation with different techniques, scale and modes of composition promote an understanding of the mechanisms of attention and of the gaze that lie at the very core of the drawing gesture.

“Letters that are not mailed cease to be missives for possible friends; they turn into archived things” (Peter Sloterdijk, 2000)*. The writings and testimonies of and about artists, in their most varied forms - diaries, letters, lessons and reflections - allow us to explore the theme of the creative process and its aesthetic and philosophical reflection, crossing in a non-linear way different generations, epochs and artistic movements (approaching the cases of romanticism, modernity, modernism, postmodernism and contemporary art). Instead of becoming “archived objects”, the writings become messages for their recipients and “possible friends”.

With less than a knife, sometimes with only the hands, the first objects of practical use or protection – con-tainer, adornment, amulet - came from the simplest matter.
These objects crossed all civilizations and their meaning is a well kept secret in the History of Humanity. From a plastic viewpoint, they attained perfection in times so old that, in many cases, not even writing ex-ists to describe them.
But they travelled through time, mixing the sacred and the profane, the erudite and the popular. The tech-nique was not lost, it was in fact perfected, to the point where technology needs ceramics as much as the potter that made a living of it.
Since nothing exists in isolation, we will bring out other materials and other arts and allow the thread of stories to be the potter’s wheel, and the images created by hand or evoked by the shamans to become con-temporary installations full of mystery, with the most “povera” of arts.
