Myths, legends and traditional stories are forms of things “seen”, even when never actually witnessed. They are rooted in the depths of the unconscious and of the tímeless memory kept in dreams. To illustrate means to bring something to light and is also a means to render visible what the letter kills.
A thread connects the most ancient initiatory evocations of entering adult life: the meaning of the nymphs and the wrath they provoque (as Roberto Calasso so aptly described), the enchantment and whirlwind that from Greco-Latin Antiquity nymphs moves on to the inspiring muses of artists, the sleep/dream of sleeping beauties, the meeting between boys, girls and animals, the metamorphosis that surface in young girls who are also animal.

Theoretical-practical workshop focused on techniques that help surpass writer’s block and, simultaneously, on the discussion of the relation between text and image, be it in a calligramme by Apollinaire or in a videopoem by Gianni Toti. The aim is to promote debate and reflection around such objects, while engaging in practical exercises in creative writing, or writing and illustration, that emphasize aspects of the relation between text and image.

On the fringe: the Bestiary, the bizarre and illustrations' intersections with texts and other ‘front page’ arts.

On-line classes.
To illustrate means bringing to light and, in history, artistic ingenuity has given free rein to fantasy, often to end up in worlds that proved inaccessible to Reason.
The bestiary has also served the purpose of speaking about the human in oblique ways, through various asides in texts or narratives and every sort of distortion, when the wonders of the world were yet to be known and reached.
The modern world, confident in the sympathies between all species in Creation, will scrutinize the physiognomy of beasts looking for human psychology, blurring the limits of both categories.
Artistic hierarquies are also dissolved as the minor bestiary in sketchbooks moves on to the big canvas, while the Human is enunciated in more monstruous becomings.

Creation of a piece to be shown in a group exhibition, thus opening possibilities for object-books and installations. Image, text and material will be worked as a whole while exploring a personal visual space/universe.
Taking as a starting point the analysis of an artistic work with which the participant identifies him/herself (film, book, painting, sculpture, etc.) a Visual Archive/Notebook is developed as a basis for the exploration of the theme, your Space.
Questions are suggested (for instance: what does my space look like? What exists there? Who inhabits it? How is the weather in my space? What does one hear in my space? What does one feel in my space?) in order to trigger answers, more direct or more metaphorical. These answers are registered in the Notebook and feed the very exploration of that Personal Visual Universe.

Exploring the expressive and stylistic potential of black ink drawing, with one foot based on cinema and the other on comics.
Departing from black and white cinema references, the students will draw key scenes from the various films filtering their interpretation through the personal styles of different comics authors. They will do so using black ink exclusively.
The workshop will be divided into two phases. First, a new pair of film/Comics will be given to interpret in each session: a Metropolis scenario, by Fritz Lang, with the thick and confident lines of a Jack Kirby, for instance, or a scene from O Sangue, by Pedro Costa, in the light of the shaky and anarchic gesture of a Brian Chippendale. In a second phase, the drawings produced will become the starting point for the elaboration of two comic strip boards by the enroled students.
The program’s ultimate purpose is the development of two essential skills: 1) principles of scene composition and light modulation that can be used in illustration as well as in comics; and 2) observation techniques that allow for the identification of the characteristics of the graphic styles of different authors, so as to consciously use them and adapt them according to one’s own affinities. Students will also learn to identify the materials appropriate for the execution of specific expressive modulations, always using black ink drawing.
