Program “The word is not the thing”: Participants will explore an approach to drawing and painting using the written and spoken word as their main source of inspiration. The focus will be on exploring the use of stain and colour, using watercolours and acrylic paints, and working in different scales: from the very small to the very large.

Program In this workshop we will elaborate a small book with photographic images produced through a playful and creative initiation to traditional processes: the “pin-hole” camera and “photograms”. Experimenting in the darkroom and developing in black and white on photographic paper. Experimental printing processes, using sunlight and organic and natural materials: “cyanotypes” or “antotypes”.

Program Animation before Cinema - This workshop invites participants on a journey through time, unveiling the secrets of animation in its analogue era. Through manual methods and drawing and Illustration techniques, students will learn how to create the illusion of movement, rediscovering the magic of the era before cinema. The workshop is dedicated to animation through the construction of optical toys such as phenakistoscopes and flip books.

Program In this workshop, students will learn to model and build clay figures using various techniques. Throughout the sessions, participants will learn about the properties of clay in its different stages of drying. The shapes created by each student will be painted in different colors, fired and glazed.

Program Each participant will learn various wood-cutting techniques, joinery, modelling methods, how to identify different types of wood, and how to use specific tools. The focus will be on the creative and exploratory process that precedes the construction of sculptures and three-dimensional figures, whilst also stimulating three-dimensional perception through natural objects that can be combined. The workshop will be divided into two distinct practical areas: wood transformation and Japanese joinery.

Program In this workshop students will create a drawing book from start to finish, page by page, folio by folio, through drawings, paintings, collages and monotypes. Each book will be inspired by stories from visual memories and from observation exercises around the school grounds.

Program
An introductory program to the visual arts on Saturdays.
In these workshops, students will explore the various disciplines taught at Ar.Co through introductory exercises and with the accompaniment of specialized teachers. They will be able to develop a portfolio of work in drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, illustration/Comics and cinema. They will also have the opportunity to try out new techniques and processes for making artwork and to develop previously acquired skills. The workshops can be attended individually or in sequence, allowing for a more comprehensive exploration of the visual arts.

Practical observation exercises aimed at developing skills in representation and expression, whilst deepening the students’ knowledge of the materials used in drawing: Indian ink, watercolour, oil pastels, charcoal and graphite. Contour, line and tone; contrast, light and shadow; surfaces and textures; representation of space – near and far; the human figure.

Program
Considering as a starting point the expansion of cinema into the space around us, the workshop aims to encourage students to explore film beyond the projection screen and to conceive of it as an installation; in physical or immaterial space; with or without images; with or without sound.
By encouraging an experimental and practical approach and drawing on techniques of filming, sound recording, lighting and editing, students will be challenged to respond to the proposed exercises, both individually and in groups, as well as to develop an individual project to conclude the module.

Program Introduction to oil painting on paper and canvas through observation exercises. Colour construction and relations between figure and ground, among other technical aspects, by resorting to models, images and personal compositions. Program
This workshop focuses on learning about and exploring a construction process based on ideal standards of proportion, the relationships between structural elements, and the myriad ways of connecting them, guided by the principles of stability, durability and balance, with a strong influence from Japanese practice. Japan’s dense forests and the scarcity of other materials due to its volcanic soil have fostered the development of timber construction techniques. The method of mortise and tenon joints will be the focus of this training.
The aim will be to practise various wood-cutting techniques; to gain knowledge of and learn how to use the tools; and to identify different species of timber. The activities will be developed through practical teaching and the exercise of creative and abstract thinking. It also aims to stimulate three-dimensional perception, using natural objects to form a structure based on the values of balance, stability and strength.

Program In this workshop we will learn how to weld and build different types of contact microphones (piezos e hidropiezos) as well as to develop instruments and sound objects that allow us to expand the expressive possibilities of sound. Departing from these devices we will aim to explore different forms of non-conventional recording and experimental composition. A sound piece – individual or collective – will emerge from these experiences.

Program
Sewing is one of the oldest human activities—and perhaps one of the most revolutionary as well. With needle and thread, two objects can be joined together; fishing nets have been made, as have clothes, and the course of human history has been altered.
In this workshop, these will be our tools: needle and thread. Simple, portable, and offering an almost infinite range of techniques and possibilities. The aim is for students to acquire a repertoire of sewing, embroidery, and beading techniques, fostering their capacity for expression and creativity through exercises designed to bring ideas to life—ideas related to the creation of an object in meaningful dialogue with the body.
Almost all of us have scraps of fabric at home, beads lost in time, memories that connect us to our ancestors and to stories from days gone by—too precious to throw away…

Wood Sculpture Workshop: Assemblage/Construction

Program
Assemblage was the basis for Cubist constructions in the early 20th century, as exemplified by the three-dimensional works of Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) and many Surrealist objects, such as the sculptures of Man Ray (1925–2003). These artists combined disparate elements, usually everyday objects and unlikely materials. Many artists have continued to explore this artistic expression in their work.
In this workshop, following a phase of experimentation and testing different combinations and ways of bringing together various materials, each participant will design a structure made predominantly of wood, taking into account the characteristics of the chosen objects to be incorporated into the sculpture. From a technical perspective, this training focuses on learning a construction process based on knowledge of wood-working, which includes making joints, using tools specific to each stage of the work.

Program In this workshop we will approach the ceramics materials in various ways. We will experiment forms of building with clay using techniques such as coils and slab and learn to finish pieces with engobe and the techniques of sgraffito and polishing. Pieces will be fired using a conventional kiln.

Program Sand casting is a practical and relatively simple method for producing small editions of jewelry or objects. In this course, students will learn how to sculpt wax and prepare the sand mold for casting. The goal is for participants to create one or more pieces of cast aluminum jewelry.
