Program
Under the sign of Nietzsche, for whom the artistic path is opposed to that of knowledge, remaining on the surface of things, this course follows the question of resemblance/similitude and diversity/dissimilitude at the level of theory and at the level of art. Figuration and “disfiguration”, associated with different notions of Reason and Truth, where artistic manifestations either prefer the “goodwill of appearance” or strive to capture something that lies beyond it.
1- The Medieval moment and its Renaissance extensions. The image as indication of a presence. The corporeal dissimilarities related to the Sacred and their spreading on the margins of the main figure – the famous “fair deformities” of the unnatural bestiaries.
2- The Baroque in a conflicting moment between the ever more scientific Truth and the affirmation of the sacred through the image’s power. Romanticism, fraught with literary and artistic whims. Cadalso/Goya: illusion in dissimilitude. The insights that cannot be reached by the discursive intellect.
3- Modernity and the paradox of irony. From sophistry to the sophisticated dandy. The flâneur who privileges the transitory instead of the classical. From the mocking Light of pataphysics to Dada.
4- The recognition of the artifice. Confusion between original and copy – denial of the model and denial of the reproduction. The arbitrariness of signs and the undifferentiated mixture of real and false. The medium and the object, the space of the exhibition and that of publicity (Duchamp, Warhol, Broodthaers, Rodney Graham, Murakami…).
