Ceramics I is the core course of year 1. Evaluation of the participants’ progress is both continuous (the responsibility of each teacher) and formally confirmed, twice a year, with the presence of the head of department. A consistent and diversified body of work will become, all throughout the year, the students’ portfolio. Distinctive characteristics of Ceramics I in the first semester: a strong emphasis on the different techniques used in the bench work; building in clay and paper clay, with coils, slab and carving block; different execution and finishing techniques; emphasis on experimentation and concentration as conditions for rigor and progress. Firing of the pieces takes place during classes so as to demonstrate how to handle the kiln and promote the participants’ autonomy in a near future.
