A theoretical and dynamic reflection on the “death” of photography at the end of the 19th century and on the birth of modern 20th century photography. Departing from the photographic and patrimonial legacy of 19th century Portuguese photographer Carlos Relvas, we will contextualize the many instances of photography’s advent at the beginning of the 19th century until its symbolic “death” at the end of the same century. The birth of modern photography and the study of its most significant 20th century aesthetic currents will help us to draw and understand the contours of photography at the beginning of the 21st century.
