Heads of Department: Marcelo Costa
Standard three-year course aiming at the development of the technical and conceptual/authorial dimensions in drawing. A diversified learning process leads to the widening of the student’s cultural, technical and artistic horizons. Practical and thematic exercises promote the development of observation and representation skills, while simultaneously encouraging an experimental attitude in regard to ways of making and the use of materials (oil paint, India ink, gouache, charcoal, pastel, graphite, etc.). Individualized modes of expression should translate a progressive familiarity with the main questions concerning contemporary artistic creation. Personalized attention is paid to each student’s progress, followed in a continuous manner by teachers and confirmed in formal evaluations with the head of department. In each of the three levels of the course, the main objective is to produce an abundant personal portfolio.
Options for further development: Individual Project, Advanced Course in the Visual Arts or other.

In The Colour of Pomegranates, the movie by Sergei Paradjanov about the medieval Armenian poet Sayat Nova, time is expressed by space, its continuity by the juxtaposition of images: a pictorial thought composed of miniatures and frescoes is revealed - an impossible and yet alive synthesis of the symmetries of Persian art, of orthodox iconography devoid of perspective and of Paradjanov’s surrealistic collages.
Exploring the singular resources of this movie, we will try to extract drawings from it and to create a material imaginary that is, according to Daney, to "the art of staying close to the elements, the materials, the colours and the textures.”

Program Departing from the logic of the sketchbook – whose logic is that of quickly registering, in graphic form, situations we are involved in - the workshop will explore the confrontations between model and draughtsman, static and dynamic, object and subject. Classes will take place indoors and outdoors, wherever events related to daily life may occur, with privileged access to actors, performers, dancers or musicians. Some of the essential aspects of live model drawing will also be explored, resorting to techniques such as charcoal, graphite and India ink.

Program Practical exercises aimed at reinventing the prescribed and normative relation between the eye that sees and the hand that draws, considering the tension abstract/concrete inherent to any model. Each exercise is proposed by the teachers, and eventually also by the students, under the form of explicit conditions that are expressed verbally. In the face of the results thus obtained, these verbal proposals will themselves become the object of analysis and discussion, bearing in mind their function in drawing practice.

Program Without the line, there is no drawing. Whether clear or fuzzy, subliminal or imagined, it’s the line that makes drawing possible. In his theoretical writings, Kandinsky explains how each curved line gives life to a portion of space and how horizontal and vertical lines give birth to the space where the drawing emerges. We will explore different aspects of the work based on the line with materials such as graphite, pen or coloured pencils.

The Evening Course in Drawing/Painting follows the general pedagogical orientations of the standard daytime course, providing a more diversified training and a quicker widening of the students’ cultural, aesthetic and technical horizons. Teachers will likewise attend to the students’ progress in a personalized and differentiated way. Within this context, practical and thematic exercises help promote the students’ capacities for observation and representation as well as the development of their expressive skills. Emphasis on experimentation in what regards both working modes and materials (oil paint, India ink, gouache, charcoal, oil pastel, graphite, etc.) ensure that students will gradually acquire an awareness of the more relevant questions regarding contemporary artistic production. Progress is closely followed by teachers and confirmed in formal evaluations with the presence of the head of department. For each level of the Course, the main objective is the constitution of a portfolio that is both abundant and as personal as possible.
- Live Model Drawing 1
Live Model Drawing is the situation of observation drawing par excellence, where the study of the human body (in motion, at rest, posing, etc.) and the experimentation with different techniques, scale and modes of composition promote an understanding of the mechanisms of attention and of the gaze that lie at the very core of the drawing gesture.
Notes The Evening Course promotes the development of technical and artistic skills in the areas of Painting/Drawing. Further development options: Level 3 of the Standard Course in Painting or Drawing, Advanced Course in the Visual Arts, Individual Project or other.

Program The Evening Course in Drawing and Painting 2 differs from the previous year in two fundamental aspects: a more specific orientation of the experimental dimension, promoting a growing individualization of the students’ work; a continuous studio practice, complementing the classroom sessions. In order to add consistency to the training, participants are encouraged to take one or several of the following workshops: Evening Drawing Workshop: The line; Evening Drawing Workshop: The stain; Evening Drawing Workshop: The image and its structure. As was the case in the previous year, evaluation of the student’s progress is at once continuous (the responsibility of teachers) and formally confirmed several times a year in the presence of the head of department. All throughout the year, participants are expected to build an individual, abundant and consistent portfolio.

Program In each drawing the stain emerges as a prelude that makes composition possible. Beyond the line and its structures, the stain opens up a space for representation. The workshop will deal with this potential: the creation of surfaces through the use of techniques and materials such as India ink or charcoal.

We will lean on the observation of various graphic materials and introduce techniques such as collage and oil pastel.
