Program Experimental movies, in general, have been forgotten in the “cracks” of cinema history. This is particularly evident when we are talking about women filmmakers. Alice Guy-Blaché, Lois Weber, Dorothy Arzner, Germaine Dulac, Esfir Schub and Elisaveta Svilova are examples of women who, since the age of pre-cinema and the subsequent silent movie period, have contributed to the development of cinematographic language. Although essential to the development of the industry, to montage theory and to cinematographic thought, a lot of these women had their memories relegated to the footnotes of canonic cinema history. Women will grow in number in the experimental genre partly because they were deliberately removed from showbusiness leadership, thus making the experimental a more egalitarian joint space. All throughout the history of experimental cinema, Maya Deren, Rose Lowder, Abigail Child, Su Friedrich, Marie Menken, Barbara Hammer, Chantal Akerman, Trinh T. Minh-há and Narcisa Hirsch have fought in the trenches of the avant-garde. More recently, Ana Vaz, Azucena Losana, Malena Szlam, Naomi Uman, Alexandra Cuesta, o colectivo Los Ingrávidos and Susana Sousa Dias continue to explore the potential of cinematographic language. We will analyse their works from an aesthetic and formal perspective and use them to conduct us in a critical reflection on experimental and avant-garde cinema.
Notes Course will be lectured in Portuguese.

Program This workshop aims to investigate light as an expressive and narrative element in cinema, photography and the visual arts. Through observation and practice, we explore how lighting can shape atmospheres, construct meanings and transform the visual experience. We will cover initial notions of camera and stage lighting, experimenting with techniques using light and shadow to reveal the creative power of light and dark in the image (still and moving).
